Pronounced, Ava-yun-ne.
This is a piece from my personal collection which I purchased in the early 2000's from a dear friend who traveled to New Mexico and regularly purchased from Native American artisans for his trade store. I have been the only owner of this beautiful handmade clay jar. I have chosen to sell it because I no longer have the space to properly showcase it in our home and I believe it deserves to be a crown jewel in a true collector's display.
"For more than a millennium, the horned or plumed serpent, known in the Tewa Pueblo language as Avanyu, has occupied a place of great importance within the culture and cosmology of the Puebloan Indians of the American Southwest. Symbolic both of earthly and supernatural phenomena — clouds, rain, lightning, bodies of water and the fusion of the terrestrial to the heavenly — its likeness has snaked itself across the steep desert rock faces and sheer cliff overhangs over thousands of miles of the temperamentaldesert terrain within the vast radius of what now constitutes the territories of Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado."
The story of Avanyu can be located in the links to your right at the bottom.
- The surface of this jar does show age with light scuffing and a chip line which can all be seen in the images provided.
- This is an authentic piece of Native American clay pottery and a rare vintage item. It has been priced fairly to reflect it's condition.
Please read below to learn more about the artist.
Carol G. Lucero Gachupin (b. 1958) is a well-known Jemez Pueblo potter who learned the art from her mother, Margaret Lucero, and acclaimed pottery artist Marie Romero. Carol loved to draw as a kid, and attended drawing classes after school led by renowned artist Alfred “Al” Momaday, father of N. Scott Momaday, Ph.D., the first Native American to win a Pulitzer Prize for literature.
Carol uses traditional pottery methods passed down through generations, first making her own natural clay and pigments, then molding and painting her figures by hand, and finally firing outdoors.
Inspired by memories of her grandfather telling stories around the fire and dinner table, Carol specializes in storyteller figures, and is known for the incredible level of detail and sophisticated painting in her figurines.
